Wow! What a successful Halloween haunted house at the May-Stringer Heritage Museum. The Hernando Historical Museum Association had its seventh annual haunted house on Oct. 27 and 31 with wonderful results.

I would like to thank all of the volunteers who pitched in and made this the best one ever. We get a lot of volunteers for this event -- some we only see once a year and some work for our organization all year long. They all deserve our special thanks.

And I'd like to thank the people who attended and donated money to our organization. A special thanks to Dr. Jack Powell, who told wonderful stories about his book, The Haunting Sunshine, and so graciously signed autographs. Also, thank you to "Lorraine," our resident psychic, for all of her predictions.

We are already planning next year's event, and what an event it will be. Looking forward to seeing all of you again.
-- Jan Knowles, president Hernando Historical Museum Association

On Nov. 12, I saw something I never thought I would see. A traffic jam on a Monday night in Brooksville. Thanks to Golden Corral and manager Gary Timmons, traffic was a problem, but it was a nice problem.

Golden Corral restaurants all over the country let it be known they would feed veterans on Veterans Day for free. It was their thank you to a very special group of people. They hoped they would respond, and if Brooksville is any indication, respond they did!

Timmons and the staff were there to greet each one. It was like a family dinner, only this time the "family" was lined around the block. And when I left at 6:15 p.m., it was showing no signs of stopping.

I watched as veterans came up to Timmons and thanked him over and over, and I thought to myself, "Who should be thanking whom with the sacrifices they all had made for us and this country?"

But then, isn't that what this country is all about? Thank yous, sacrifices and uniting once again, since Sept. 11.

Maybe we are just one big family after all. God bless the USA and all our veterans.
-- Julia Jinkens, Brooksville
