Signing

Gibbs running back Javon Jackson has signed a letter of intent with Tulane. Jackson, a four-year starter for the Gladiators, chose Tulane over Syracuse, Duke, Iowa and Minnesota.

"I did a lot of research and Tulane was the best place for me," Jackson said. "They have an excellent sports medicine program, which is something I'm interested in. I like the coaching staff. I like the atmosphere."

Jackson follows in the footsteps of former Gibbs quarterback Shaun King, who also attended Tulane before joining the Buccaneers. Jackson said he was recruited to play running back, although he was also a linebacker for Gibbs.

Jackson rushed for 552 yards in 10 games and also caught 36 passes for 321 yards. He had 12 touchdowns overall.

Baseball

All Pinellas County schools are invited to join a 16-under baseball league, which plays its games Feb. 15 to March 23.

The league will hold a scheduling and rules meeting Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Palm Harbor University teachers cafeteria. Those interested must bring their field availability.

For information, call Greg Nichols at 733-7057.

Soccer

The Tampa Bay Heather under-17 girls soccer team recently won the Super Clubs tournament in Orlando. The Heather won the championship by beating Melbourne Beach Tsunami 1-0. In the tournament, Tampa Bay posted a record of 4-0-1.
