Program to focus on Alzheimer's caregivers

The University of South Florida Gerontology Center will sponsor a free community program, "Alzheimer's Disease: What Caregivers Need to Know" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Westside Conference Center at the USF campus in Tampa.

The program is for those caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease and will feature practical tips, resources and information to help caregivers understand the disease process, manage troublesome behaviors and learn the most current treatment and research opportunities. Volunteers needed to befriend kids

The Pinellas County Family Friends Program needs adult volunteers to become friends with medically needy children in foster homes. If you have two to four hours per week to spend time with a special child, call (727) 538-7460, ext. 3020.

SPCA offers a different viewpoint on pets

Take a look at your pets from a different angle. Join the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to discuss "Trusts in Depth, a Pet Lover's Perspective" at noon Jan. 11 at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, 11 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. RSVP: (727) 581-3249.

Older pets develop special needs

If your pet is getting older, get some tips on just how to care for their special needs through "Caring for Geriatric Pets" at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the St. Petersburg Public Library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. RSVP: (727) 586-3591.

Largo adult day center plans open house

Neighborly Senior Services will have an open house at its new adult day center in Largo on Jan. 19. Adult day centers can provide an alternative to nursing home placement and enable caregivers to pursue careers, run errands or rest.

The center will be similar in size and nature to the Neighborly Adult Day Health Center at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Peters burg and will have the capacity to provide day care for up to 35 persons with physical and/or memory-related disabilities. Information: (727) 540-0919.
