Lewis looks toward Tyson, then retirement

Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis is contemplating retirement, but first he wants to fight Mike Tyson.

"I am only thinking about one fight next year, and that's with Mike Tyson," he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio Sunday. "Once I get Tyson out of the way, I will probably think about retiring."

Lewis, the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation champion, told the BBC he thinks the fight, which has not been scheduled, could take place in the middle of the year.

"There's too much money and too much demand for the fight," he said. "Too many people want it."

BASKETBALL: Connecticut reached a milestone in its run at No. 1 in the women's poll. The Huskies held the top spot Monday for the 27th consecutive time, the second-longest stretch in the poll's 25 years. Louisiana Tech was No. 1 in 36 straight polls from 1980-82. Tennessee, which plays at Connecticut on Saturday, remained No. 2. Florida was No. 19. ... Michigan State waited 21 years between men's national championships. It took a little longer to become No. 1 in the poll a second time. The Spartans became the third team to hold the top ranking this season, joining Duke and Arizona. Michigan State, which last held the top spot in 1979, received 46 first-place votes and 1,605 points from the national media panel. Stanford, No. 1 on the other 19 ballots, moved up to No. 2 after knocking Duke from the top to No. 3 by beating the Blue Devils in the Pete Newell Classic. Wake Forest and Florida each moved up two spots, to fourth and fifth, respectively.

OLYMPICS: With the Winter Games less than 14 months away, Salt Lake City officials are trying to find tenants for 18 boarded-up and empty buildings downtown. The city has hired a real estate agent and an architectural firm. Officials prefer long-term tenants but will settle for some short-term leases on a stretch of Main Street. Most business owners in the area say they think a vibrant Main Street benefits everyone, but some question parts of the city's plan. "I'm a little worried about the viability of retail unless it's particularly strong," Tony Weller of Sam Weller's Books said. "Unless short-term tenants are unique in what they do, surviving in this neighborhood is tough because of the parking problems."

HORSES: Grey Memo rallied down the stretch late Sunday to win the $78,250 On Trust Handicap at Hollywood (Calif.) Park. Cliquot was second.

CYCLING: Frankie Andreu, a teammate of two-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, retired to become the American director of Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service team. Andreu, 34, raced for 11 years as a professional in Europe, competed in the Tour de France nine times and raced in the 1988 and '96 Olympics.

AUTO RACING: Tim Brewer, the chief of NASCAR Winston Cup championship crews in 1978 and '81, returns to the role next season with Ultra Motorsports and driver Mike Wallace. Brewer, 45, who has worked in research and development for Ultra Motorsports the past two years, took the job when former chief Bobby Kennedy resigned to take a position with Michael Waltrip Motorsports.
