WEST PALM BEACH -- Two escaped convicts nearly slipped through a traffic stop undetected until the mother of one of the men pulled up and turned them in.

Jason Hall and Jason Negm, both 26, were reported missing from the Palm Beach County Stockade on Saturday evening after a work detail at the Coast Guard station in Riviera Beach.

Hall and Negm were riding with a friend Sunday when they were pulled over for a cracked windshield, police said.

Lake Clarke Shores patrol Officer Troy Jenne tried to check out the car and driver, but the dispatcher was busy, so he decided to let the men go.

Then Hall's mother pulled up and told the officer that Hall was on the run.

"She didn't want him to get into more trouble," Jenne said.

Hall and Negm were arrested. Their friend, Eugene Caswell, 25, was also arrested for failing to appear in court last summer.

"It killed me, but I did what I know was right for him and for me," Hall's mother said.

The Stuart woman did not give her name to protect her family.

Hall would have finished his six-month sentence for burglary and petty theft Jan. 29.

Negm was sentenced to six months for dealing in stolen property and was due out Feb. 12.

Each faces up to 15 years if convicted of the escape, one year for every hour out of jail.

A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22.
