Hooray for officers who enforce traffic laws

Re: Trooper, chief clash over beach turf, Dec. 6.

The Treasure Island Police Department should hang its head in shame. To be fighting against a Florida Highway Patrol trooper who is enforcing traffic laws that the Police Department should be (but is not) enforcing is ridiculous. It is obvious that officers do not have the time or desire to enforce traffic laws because no matter where drive, you see constant, horrendous traffic violations. Reckless driving, speeding, running red lights, running stop signs, refusing to obey traffic signs -- everybody does it. No wonder road rage is booming.

I challenge anyone to drive on any street at the posted speed limit and see what develops. I guarantee that you will receive obscene gestures, horn honking and dirty looks. That is your reward for obeying the law.

I commend any law enforcement officer who strictly enforces traffic laws. It is for the safety of us all.

Re: Sonny's swing kids, Nov. 27 Floridian story.

Congratulations on Lane DeGregory's wonderful article on musician Sonny LaRosa. What a refreshing piece on children who are so involved in music.

One of my former students, Megan Kelly, has worked/played in America's Youngest Jazz Band for several years. When she was a petite second-grader, she brought her trumpet to school to play a cute version of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

We are fortunate to have one generation passing on its musical heritage in Sonny LaRosa's manner.

Magic and wonder at Sunken Garden

We went to the Victorian Christmas display at Sunken Gardens and found it to be an absolutely fantastic array of lights and flowers. Everywhere you turned, you saw something wonderful. Imagine seeing a huge Christmas tree fashioned from poinsettias. The Dickens trio was also wonderful. It seemed a shame to keep this display for only four days.

While looking at this festive array, I was thankful that the people voted to keep the gardens and not have them destroyed, as some wished to do.
