Alka-Seltzer

photoThe medicinal bubbly that many people reach for after too much New Year's Eve bubbly was devised in 1928 to combat a national flu epidemic. Today it is used to relieve stomach discomfort plus other aches and pains, such as headaches and sore joints.

Alka-Seltzer tablets contain aspirin, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. When the citric acid and bicarbonate hit water, a fizz is created. The tablets also include an antacid and the analgesic sodium acetylsalicylate. The aspirin helps quell the pounding headache, and the sodium bicarbonate soothes the stomach by neutralizing excess stomach acid. (Each tablet contains 567 mg of sodium, so those on salt-restricted diets should take heed. Also, people who have negative reactions to aspirin should probably refrain.)

Don't need Alka-Seltzer for your tummy? Use it to clean your bathroom bowl. According to Mom.com, drop in two tablets, wait 20 minutes, brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean the porcelain surface.

To avoid the chance of contaminating your pepper mill or salt shaker while seasoning raw chicken, Cook's Illustrated suggests combining the salt and pepper in a small bowl before sprinkling the ingredients on the chicken.

The retailers behind this Web site, an offshoot of Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Mich., sell mail-order cheese from France, coffee from Guatemala and wild Italian fennel pollen or "fairy dust for food lovers." Zingerman's has bread clubs and cheese clubs and butters with lovely names such as echire (from France) and occelli (Italy). The Egg Farm Dairy American butter was named "best butter in America" by the New York Times and sells for $10 a pound.

Even if you aren't going to buy anything, it's worth a look. You'll be incredibly hungry after looking at the fabulous breads and sweets. If you're not online, call (888) 636-8162 for a catalog.

coverThe music of the Beatles has inspired many people but perhaps none so strangely as Stephan J. Signesi. His new cookbook, She Came in Through the Kitchen Window: Recipes Inspired by the Beatles and Their Music (Citadel Press, $17.95), begins "The Beatles are more than a musical group. Let's face it . . . The Beatles are a bloomin' lifestyle." We had no idea. Some of the recipes include Happiness is a Warm Bun (Happiness is a Warm Gun), I Am the Scrambled Eggman (I Am the Walrus), And I Love Herb (And I Love Her) and our favorite, Lovely Pita (Lovely Rita).

we don't know

Although the vast majority of Americans say they are concerned about food safety, a recent survey by Tyson Foods found that many people barely understand how to prepare foods safely. Only about half of those questioned use meat thermometers, and 35 percent didn't know that wooden cutting boards should not be used for cutting meat and poultry.
