Raising the bar on still lifes

In the unusual medium of oil bar, a waxy oil-paint crayon, Florida artist Andrew Morgan takes us to the coast of Oregon, the hills of Santa Fe, the swamps of the Everglades or the still lifes of his studio. Morgan, exhibiting in a one-person show at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, Largo, through Jan. 27, lets bold brush strokes define his sureness as well as his subjects, as in Reflections, Everglades, shown here.

During Morgan's career in the field of art education, he headed three college art departments and was called upon to consult at other schools. He had no time to paint, until he retired.

A catalog accompanying the show was funded by a grant from the Richard Florsheim Art Fund, which assists American artists of merit, older than 55 and of professional stature. Though it operates nationwide, it is administered in Tampa.

Also on temporary exhibit are works by MADI, an international movement of whimsical geometric abstracts.

The museum, at 12211 Walsingham Road, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission: $3 to $5. Free Thursdays. (727) 518-6833.
