The real thing

The legendary B.B. King was here not quite a year ago, but his fans are eager for another dose of that sizzling blues guitar.

The 76-year-old ambassador of the blues long ago changed the way electric guitar was played by taking single-string leads -- the kind T-Bone Walker and other old cats played -- and adding vibrato and dazzling, vocal-like phrasing.

King inspired Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughan and just about every skinny, funky-toothed British rock star of the 1960s.

But, there ain't nothing like the real thing. Catch King and his beloved Lucille -- the name he gives every guitar he plays -- while he's still hot.

B.B. King performs at 8 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. Tickets are $35-$75. (727) 791-7400.

One big funk

Deep Banana Blackout plays nasty funk along the lines of Sly and the Family Stone and Mr. James Brown. But the Blackout is huge, an ensemble with full horn section, percussion, keys and all the standard fare, too.

These kids tour incessantly. Why? Because the live gig, for them, is what it's all about. Need a little soul, a little groove before you get your New Year on? Don't miss this show.

Deep Banana Blackout performs at 7 p.m. Sunday at Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $15. (727) 896-2276.
