Music festival has Dali theme
Two concerts in the fourth annual Winter Sun Music Festival have a Salvador Dali theme, with music tied to Dali paintings. Mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna performs the Ravel Mallarme Songs and the leading role in DeFalla's El Amor Brujo Wednesday afternoon at 3 at the Dali Museum. Thursday, Tonna and Jennifer Hester Sanchez are the soloists in Ravel's Rhapsodie Espagnole, with the festival orchestra under Paul Hostetter, at 7:30 p.m. at the Palladium Theater.
Tonna, pictured here, is an Eckerd College graduate (and former St. Petersburg Times library employee) who has gone on to develop a busy career in New York, singing everything from Bach cantatas to zarzuela.
The festival opens New Year's Day at 3 p.m. with a chamber music concert in Dendy-McNair Auditorium at Eckerd College featuring, among others, the Trio Diverso. Winding up the fest is the DaPonte String Quartet, which plays works of Schulhoff, Grieg and Bartok at 3 p.m. Jan. 4 at Dendy-McNair.
Winter Sun musicians can be heard during St. Petersburg's First Night celebration at St. Peter's Episcopal Church from 7 to 11:30 p.m. New Year's Eve.
A festival pass is $30. Single tickets are $10. (727) 864-8471.
