Blue realism
If The Blue Girdle, now at the Museum of Fine Arts, reminds you of Edgar Degas, you know your styles. The work is an oil painted in 1906 by Everett Shinn, who was influenced by the French Impressionist, as is seen in the loose brushwork and subject matter. Both had a strong attachment to the theater. But Shinn was an American, as are all the artists in "An American Palette: Works From the Collection of John and Dolores Beck," now on view. Shinn was a member of the Eight, a group of New York realists who rejected the values of the Gilded Age to paint the city's working class. At one time, Shinn lived in Sarasota. The show is on view at the museum through Jan. 14. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission: $6; 65 and older, $5; students, $2; Sunday, free.
