Music in the winter sun
The third annual Winter Sun Music Festival runs from Sunday through Jan. 4 at Eckerd College, with four concerts, master classes and lecture/recitals. The ensemble in residence will be the Maine-based DaPonte String Quartet, which will play an all-Beethoven program at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dendy-McNair Auditorium.
The festival also presents an orchestra concert, led by William Thomas. Featured soloists are cellist Yves Dharamraj, playing the Haydn Cello Concerto, and pianist Manabu Ken Takasawa, playing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Also on the agenda: William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1. The performance is 8 p.m. Thursday at Dendy-McNair.
Festival participants include student and professional musicians from the Tampa Bay area and around the country. They also will be performing during First Night in downtown St. Petersburg.
