By SUSAN THURSTON, Times Staff Writer Junior Woman's Club helps 78 childrenTAMPA PALMS -- The New Tampa Junior Woman's Club donated gifts for 78 children as part of its Special Santa Project. Children received socks, underwear, a uniform or school outfit and toys. Club members collected the items and distributed them to families on Dec. 14 in time for Christmas. Sammy Smith of Tampa Palms started the project eight years ago to help struggling families and their children. The woman's club recently took it over due to the growing demand. The club is a nonprofit organization of women that helps the community through service projects, volunteer efforts and fundraisers. Silent auction raises $600 for Joshua House shelterPEBBLE CREEK -- The North East Tampa Business and Professional Women's Club raised $600 for the Joshua House during a silent auction at its year-end holiday party. The Joshua House is a shelter in Lutz for abused children. The club helps working women in New Tampa, Lutz and Wesley Chapel through training workshops and social gatherings. It meets the second Thursday night of every month at the Pebble Creek Golf and Country Club. Playground fire believed to be arsonHUNTER'S GREEN -- Fire officials are investigating a fire that destroyed playground equipment at the Vinings apartments in New Tampa. Firefighters were called to the apartment complex at 8801 Hunter's Lake Drive at 3 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, the wooden and plastic play set was engulfed in flames, said Tampa fire Capt. Bill Wade. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Officials suspect three boys set the fire around the play set and it got out of control.
