CHRISTMAS FOR THE BIRDS: The Hernando Audubon Society will have its Christmas Bird Count Saturday. Watchers will meet at 5 a.m. at Alice's Restaurant on U.S. 41 in Brooksville. Fee is $3, and money benefits the Audubon Society. For information, call 592-4949.

ART AMONG THE STACKS: The work of Spring Hill artist Rosalie Pelton Washington will be on display from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Public Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave., off Cortez Boulevard in Spring Hill. For information, call 596-1077.

STAY HERE IN THE GARDEN: The musical The Secret Garden opens Jan. 11 and continues Thursdays and weekends through Jan. 28 at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for students age 17 and younger. The theater's box office is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and one hour before each show. Call 683-5113.

FIN FUN: The seventh annual Mermaid Rod Run Car Show will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St. The cost to register is $15 in advance and $20 on show day. The event is hosted by the American Business Women's Association, Tangerine Charter Chapter. There will be music, door prizes, food and a raffle for a $1,000 prize. Admission is free to spectators. This year's deadline for the Will McLean Foundation's Best New Florida Song Contest is Feb. 1. Songwriters may submit up to three songs about people, history, heritage, natural beauties or "critters" of Florida. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in the adult and under 18 categories. Winning songwriters are invited to perform at the annual Will McLean Music Festival March 10 and 11 at the Sertoma Youth Ranch. For information, call (352) 465-7208
