WinterWalk equestrian event at state park

The Withlacoochee State Forest will sponsor an equestrian "WinterWalk" along the Richloam Tract at Little River Ranch at 9 a.m. Jan. 6. Participants must provide proof of current negative Coggins (virus test) for their horses.

Space is limited due to parking restrictions. The guided tour is free. For information or reservations, stop by the state forest's recreation/visitor center, 15003 Broad St., Brooksville, or call 754-6896. The WinterWalk series of tours features newly purchased public lands recently added to the Withlacoochee State Forest in Hernando, Citrus and Sumter counties. Upcoming WinterWalks include the Baird unit of the Richloam Tract on Feb. 3 and the Homosassa Tract on March 3.

Qualifying competition for youth fashion show

BROOKSVILLE -- Hernando County youths ages 8-18 interested in participating in the Florida State Fair Fashion Show must compete in the county qualifying contest scheduled for Jan. 5 in the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service office, 19490 Oliver St.

The event will begin at 10 a.m.; contestants must arrive by 9:30 a.m. There will be both age and fashion categories, such as simple casual, costumes, sophisticated suits and evening gowns. All are to be sewn and modeled by the participants. Winners chosen will represent Hernando County in the state fair fashion show, scheduled for Feb. 10. Sign language course offered

The Deaf Service Center of Pasco-Hernando will offer a 10-week sign language course beginning in January. Classes will be held in Spring Hill, Port Richey, Dade City and Zephyrhills. Senior Citizen Academy open house at PHCC

BROOKSVILLE -- Pasco-Hernando Community College will host a kick-off event/open house for its Senior Citizen Academy from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 5 on the north campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd. There will be guided tours and information about PHCC classes.

The academy is open to seniors age 60 or older and their spouses. A one-year membership includes a free 3-hour credit course during the year (subject to space availability) and one 8-hour continuing education course each term. For information, call Chuck Sotis, 796-6726, ext. 2208 or 597-6925.

Christmas trees can be recycled

Christmas trees will be accepted for recycling at the following Hernando County Waste Management facilities: Northwest Waste Management, 14450 Landfill Road, Brooksville; West Hernando Transfer Station, 2525 Osowaw Blvd., Spring Hill; and East Hernando Transfer Station, 33070 Cortez Blvd., Ridge Manor. Mulch is available, free of charge, to Hernando County residents at all three locations. Those disposing of their Christmas trees are reminded to remove all decorations, lights and stands prior to bringing them to the locations. For information, call 754-4112.

Free boating safety class available

BROOKSVILLE -- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will provide a free boating safety class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 17 and 18 in the Community Education Complex on Varsity Drive.

The course will cover safety issues related to the operation of all boats, including personal watercraft. The course satisfies the requirements of the mandatory boating course for those born after Sept. 30, 1980. Books are furnished free. Pre-registration is required. For information, call 797-7017.
