TAMPA PALMS -- Families looking for a break from watching football on New Year's Day can head to the new YMCA under construction in New Tampa.

Debbie Metzger, the branch manager, and other YMCA employees will lead public tours of the site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.

"The idea is to come on out and take a look at what's going to be in your Y," she said.

The YMCA on Compton Drive should open mid to late summer. Construction started this month after several delays.

Memberships go on sale this week for about $60 a month for families and $42 for individuals. Officials hope to sell 1,500 by the opening.

The hard hat tours will offer people a glimpse of what amenities and programs to expect. Prospective members can walk around the site and even step on the floor of the future gymnasium. Many of the walls are up and the various rooms will be labeled.

The 40,000-square-foot facility will include an Olympic-size swimming pool, fitness center, aerobic studio, rock climbing wall, spinning studio, teen center, chapel and family game room. University Community Hospital also will open a wellness center.

Planners wanted to create a place where entire families can come together for fun and exercise.

Postcards announcing the tour went out to everyone who lives in the New Tampa-area ZIP code. Refreshments and information about memberships will be provided.
