Florida-Miami: A rivalry revisited

Florida and Miami play for the first time in 13 seasons Tuesday in New Orleans. To refresh everyone's memories of this bitter rivalry, the Times will review one classic game in the series each day leading up to the Sugar Bowl.

No. 10 Miami 32, No. 17 Florida 20

Sept. 1, 1984, Tampa Stadium

In a story line made for the movies, a crowd of 72,813 and an ESPN television audience watched Florida quarterback Kerwin Bell, a walk-on fifth-stringer promoted to starter because of injuries, make his debut against the defending national champion Hurricanes.

Florida trailed 19-13 with 4:27 left when Bell engineered a 52-yard, 11-play drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Frankie Neal. UF led 20-19 with 41 seconds left, but it was too much time.

Miami senior quarterback Bernie Kosar marched the 'Canes 72 yards, throwing a 12-yard touchdown to Eddie Brown with seven seconds left for a 26-20 lead. Miami added another touchdown on a 59-yard interception return by Tolbert Bain on the game's final play.
