ST. PETERSBURG -- A troubled man went to church Wednesday evening to talk about a killing and wound up pointing police to a woman's body in an apartment 2 miles away.

The woman, about 30 years old, had been shot in her home at 743 35th Ave. S, just east of Lake Maggiore. The man was in police custody Wednesday night, being questioned about her death. He had not been charged late Wednesday.

Neither of their names were released.

Investigators learned of the slaying in a roundabout way.

Police said the man, feeling remorseful, went with his brother to Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church, 3455 26th Ave. S, where they knew a deacon. The men, who are not church members, talked to the deacon, police said.

At that point, someone at the church called a lawyer. The lawyer notified the State Attorney's Office of the situation, and prosecutors called St. Petersburg police just after 6:30 p.m., said police spokesman Bill Doniel.

Officers went to the church, where the man told them where to find the dead woman. Her body was in a ground-floor apartment at the rear of a large house. Detectives weren't sure when the woman was shot. Neighbors had seen her Wednesday morning.

Although police didn't verify the woman's identify, neighbors believed they knew who she was. Only she lived in the apartment.

Neighbors said the woman had children, had lived there less than two months and worked at a fast-food restaurant.

"She was nice. She was always coming over, asking to use our phone," said Dawn Fosdick, 25, who lives across the street. "Usually, this neighborhood is quiet."
