TAMPA -- A former private school teacher accused of a sexual relationship with a student pleaded guilty Thursday to committing a lewd and lascivious act.
As part of a plea agreement, Denise McBryde will be sentenced to nearly three years in prison and will be taken into custody at a court hearing next week, when her trial was scheduled to begin.
"The victim's family is more than eager to get this behind the kid so he can move on," prosecutor Joan Corces said Thursday.
McBryde, 38, was charged last year with having sex with a 15-year-old boy she met while teaching physical education at the private Florida College Academy in Temple Terrace. She was accused of having sex with the teen at her home, at his home and at a hotel.
She was arrested after the boy's parents tried unsuccessfully to quietly end the affair.
As part of the plea agreement, the state dropped two of three counts of lewd and lascivious acts. The deal calls for a sentence of two years and eight months in prison, two years of house arrest, and five years of probation.
Had McBryde been convicted of all three charges, she would have faced 12 to 22 years in prison.
McBryde, who is married and has three children, worked for two months at McLane Middle School before her arrest.
Her attorney said that after her arrest, McBryde was suspended without pay.
