Tortured past,
uncertain future
FROM AN EARLIER WAR: The conflict in Kosovo is only the latest violence in a region marked by turmoil. Bosnia was the scene of fighting throughout the early 1990s. In Sarajevo, any open spaces became places to bury the dead. Wooden crosses like this now cover what was once a soccer field. Many of the burials came at night, so that friends and relatives of the deceased would not be easy targets for snipers.
