Excerpts from Whispel's statement
By (transcript) © St. Petersburg Times, published July 2, 1999 Adam Davis and Whispel met at Denny's restaurant in Carrollwood hours before Vicki Robinson was murdered on the night of June 27, 1998. Whispel describes what happened as the two men waited for Valessa Robinson to arrive. WHISPEL: While we was at Denny's, Adam seen this waitress that he knew that works there and talked to her about, you know, getting Ecstasy and everything. And she said, well, her boyfriend could probably get it, but she has to wait for him to get there. So we waited there, smoking cigarettes, talking and whatnot. And her boyfriend pulls up, and ... you know, he's like, "Well, let me make a phone call." Talks -- talks to him and says, "I can't get the Ecstasy, but I can get you some liquid acid on sugar cubes." And we're like, "All right." You know, "We'll do it," at which point Valessa pulls up. PROSECUTOR SHIRLEY WILLIAMS: How did Valessa get there? A: She -- she got there on the -- on the green bike that I indicated. And then from there we went to the guy's house. I bought three -- three of the sugar cubes for me, Adam, and Valessa, and Valessa bought one for her and Adam to split. We dropped them there. And then from there we went back to the Denny's. And I ordered food and orange juice. And then after that, you know, we was talking and everything. And I was like, "What are we going to do?" And Valessa's like, "Well, we can go back to my house and trip on my black light." And I said, "All right. That's cool, you know. Let's do that. And what about, you know, a strobe light? Do you got a strobe light?" She's like, "Yeah. I got a strobe light. We can trip on that too."' And then, you know, the food comes, orange juice comes. And then, you know, we're talking and drinking. And then, you know, Valessa smiles, you know, jumped up and down and is like, "Let's kill my mom." And Adam's like, "What?" You know, Valessa's like, "Let's kill my mom." And he's like, "Okay." The killingWHISPEL: About a minute later, you know, Vicki, comes knocking on the door and says, "Valessa." Nobody said anything or moved or opened the door or nothing so she knocked again and said, "Valessa. Adam opened the door and, you know, she -- she's like, "Well, what are you two still doing here? I thought y'all left." ... And she was like, "Valessa, get your sleeping bag now." So nobody moved, and then she said, "Valessa, now." So Adam went to grab the sleeping bag and give it to her. And then Vicki turned around and walked into the kitchen, and Adam followed -- followed her, at which point I -- we heard whispered voices. We couldn't understand what was being said, but we heard whispered voices. Q: Coming from who? A: Coming from Vicki and Adam. But there was silence after that. The next thing we hear is somebody gasping for breath like they are being choked or something. So me and -- me and Valessa, we run out into the kitchen. And Valessa's like, "What do we do?" He's like, "Give me the syringe. I need the syringe." So me and Valessa, we turned around, go back into the room and knelt down on the floors, you know, acting like I was looking for the syringe and everything. I said, "I can't find it." Valessa all afraid, and she's screaming, "I can't find the syringe, Adam. I can't find the syringe." I looked out the door, and I seen -- I seen Adam and Vicki in front of the door but in the kitchen area but by -- by -- right next to the cabinets where the sink is. So he says, "Valessa, come out here and hold your mom now so I can get the syringe." A few seconds later I walked out, you know, to see what was going on. And Vicki was sitting in front of Adam. Adam had his back against the cabinets where the stove and the kitchen are -- I mean, and the fridge is, and Valessa was sitting on her legs. I looked, and Adam was trying to put the needle in. And Vicki was like, "What are you doing? What are you doing?" And Adam took the syringe and put it in her neck and then put the bleach and the air bubble in and put it out. And she was like, "What was that?" Adam was like, "It's not working. It's not working." So I turned around. I went into the bedroom, grabbed a knife that he always carried with him, walked out, had -- had the blade in my hand and held it out and said, "Here. Use this." Plotting a getawayWHISPEL: "And he (Davis) was making phone calls for passports because he -- you know, he wanted to go to -- we wanted to go to -- Australia. Say, you know, just leave the whole country altogether So we was making phone calls for that and everything, noticed it -- you know, it was going to be way too much (money) from what we had. So we just gave that idea up. And then he said, "Well, wait a minute. We'll just go to Canada then. We'll just drive to Canada, but we got -- we'll stop at Phoenix, Arizona, so we can get some crystal meth ... " So we fell asleep in the motel that day, woke up. It was like 6:30, 7. It was starting to get nighttime. Q: Is that still Saturday night? A: Saturday night. So we went down to Ybor City. And while we was there I said, you know, "F--- it. Let's just, you know, take some Ecstasy tonight," you know. "Let's just," I guess, "party," if you want to say. And then he (Davis) said, "All right. We'll do that." 'She's to blame for it'Q: What did Adam tell you A: Adam -- Adam said that he wants -- he -- he wants the girl to take the blame and everything. Q: "The girl." Valessa? A: Valessa. I said, "Why?" And he goes, "Well, you know, she's to blame for it." I said, "What do you mean she's to blame for it?" He's like, "Well, you know, she -- she brought up the subject and everything." I said, "That don't mean nothing." And he's like, "Well, still, you know, she's going to take all the blame, and I don't care." I said, "Whatever." And so he said, you know, "What are you going to do?" I said, "Man, just don't worry about it." And I said, "That's my idea, not yours." So he's like, "All right. I see how this is going to be." I said, "Yeah. This is going to be just like that." So we hung up. About two days later ... Adam gets on the phone, and we're talking. He's still bringing up the subject with Valessa and everything about how is her -- she is to blame for it and everything. And I just said, you know, "You do what you got to do. I'm doing what I got to do, and she's doing what she's got to do. So we ain't sticking together on -- on this." Q: Have you -- have you talked to Adam about -- since that second phone call? © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
