Speeding slow-closing Word files

Q. I also am having problems with Word files that close slowly (Aug. 30). I tried your solution, but received this error message: "Error Starting Program. Outllib.dll file is linked to missing MAPI32.DLL:239."

A. Keep in mind that the journaling problem manifests itself only in networks, not in a normal home PC environment. The problem you are experiencing is sometimes caused by installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Microsoft Outlook Express and selecting the option to make Outlook Express the default Simple MAPI client. According to Microsoft, to reset your default Simple MAPI Client:

1. Start Outlook Express.

2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

3. Click the General tab, then click to clear Make Outlook Express My Default Simple MAPI Client.

4. Restart Windows.

Boot error

Q. When I boot up, I get two error messages: "Cannot find the file PKGB135.SCR (or one of its components). Make sure path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available." As well as: "DESKTOP: Could not find or run PKGB.SCR135 speci." I called Packard Bell, and a tech checked both Packard Bell and Microsoft and had no clue what the files were

A. I could not find any reference to these files either. "SCR" files are typically screen savers. Check your screen saver settings (right-click on the desktop and choose Properties, Screen Saver). Change it to None. If the problem persists, you will need to check to see where in the start-up sequence this file is referenced.

For Windows 98 users, the easiest way to do this is to run the System Information tool (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information or Start, Run, type MSINFO32 and press Enter). Select Tools, System Configuration Utility. From here you can selectively turn off the different areas within Windows from which programs run at start-up. You will see a tab for each area: Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, System.ini, Win.ini (expand the Windows option and check the Load and Run lines) and Start-up (this contains the programs that start from withing the registry). If you find anything that looks like it may be related to the PKGB135.SCR files, uncheck to disable it, and then reboot.

Temporary Internet files

Q. When I delete temporary Internet files and history files, they do not go to the recycle bin. Where do they go? Do they remain on my hard drive and if so how can I remove them?

A. Files in the Temporary Internet Files cannot be "moved" to the recycle bin, as you have found out. When they are deleted (through the Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer), they are permanently removed.

Registry problems

Q. In your April 26 column, you gave instructions for reinstalling Windows 95 to correct registry abnormalities. What is the procedure to reinstall Windows 98 to correct these problems?

A. Running Setup.exe from the Windows 98 CD will load a fresh copy of Windows 98 and may correct some registry abnormalities, while keeping your applications and data in place. If you are having problems, you may want to check out system tools such as System File Checker, Registry Checker and Version Conflict Manager. You will find these programs under Start, Programs, Accessories, System Information, Tools menu. One or a combination of these programs may solve your problem.

Screen saver errors

Q. I get an error message after my screen saver has been on for two minutes: "Scrscan caused an invalid page fault in module MCSCAN32.DLL at 0167:00439c0d." When this comes up, the screen saver stops and the computer starts shutting down.

A. The problem is caused by the McAffee VirusScan program when it attempts to look for infected files while the screen saver is on. You can disable this option through the VirusScan console, which should solve your problem. McAffee (now Network Associates) recommends that users who experience this problem update VirusScan to a newer version. You can get more info at http://www.NetworkAssociates.com.
