Enthusiastic fans like Mel Pelton of Seattle arrived early for the men's aerials and took in the atmosphere, maybe even creating some of their own. Behind her is the course, a 70-degree jump skiers fly off at 45 mph, catapulting them more than 50 feet into the air as they twist and turn and then, if fortunate, land on their feet.
