A REFUGE THREATENED: Brage Sassin, then 6, cries in the back yard of his Tampa Palms home, near the treehouse he retreats to to forget about the leukemia treatments he has endured since he was diagnosed at age 2. | TIME TO CHILL: Pinellas Park firefighter Phil Borum cools off during a surface-rescue training session in July, when the feels-like temperature reached as high as 109 degrees. Youd lose 5 pounds in 15 minutes in this suit on a day like this, Borum says. Its rather nice here in the pool, though. |

| HER FINAL PLACE: A cold rain falls steadily as Boomer Ford digs the grave of his mother, Marilyn Myers, hours before her funeral on her farm, Sweet Rock Bottom in Celina, Tenn., in March. See the beautiful view shell have for eternity? he asks, looking across a sweep of meadow toward rounded profiles of tree-fringed hills. Fords dog, Kaiser, keeps him company. Myers, who died of ovarian cancer at age 50, was the subject of a Times series in which she shared her thoughts about dying.
