ST. PETERSBURG -- Thirty-eight college students will share $116,200 in scholarships intended to encourage careers in the newspaper industry.

The St. Petersburg Times Scholarship Fund recipients were announced Wednesday. The fund, originally called The Poynter Fund, was established in 1953 by the Times Publishing Co. to train, assist and inspire those pursuing a career in journalism. The company publishes the Times and Congressional Quarterly, Florida Trend and Governing magazines.

In addition to announcing the recipients on Wednesday, the St. Petersburg Times Scholarship Fund established a scholarship named in honor of Gray McGhee, the newspaper's advertising art director who died July 13.

Many of the students spent the summer as interns at the Times. The scholarships reward academic achievement and a commitment to a journalism career.

In action regarding McGhee, the Times advertising art director who died this month, the Scholarship Fund agreed to make an initial $1,000 donation to the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota where McGhee attended and taught. In addition to the donation, the paper established the Gray McGhee Scholarship, which will be given to gifted interns planning careers related to graphic arts. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually.

McGhee died at the age of 36 at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Rehabilitation Institute, Tampa, from complications from treatment for leukemia.
