Game must go on, says prepared FSU

TALLAHASSEE -- Despite rumors that the game against Southern California would be canceled -- including one television report to that effect -- Florida State officials have decided to play as planned.

Meteorologists have predicted that Hurricane Georges is likely to cause only rain and gusty wind in Tallahassee this afternoon.

Doak Campbell Stadium personnel prepared for strong winds, moving television cameras inside the press box. Corporate tents may have to be hastily taken down, said Bernie Waxman, director of facilities and operations.

The good news, from a safety standpoint, is that for the first time in seven years, there is no construction at the stadium and no stray objects that the wind could turn into missiles.

An underground pumping system is expected to keep the field fairly dry. But sidelines lack sophisticated pumps, so players and coaches could be standing in water. "It will alter it (the game plan) quite a bit," FSU offensive coordinator Mark Richt said. "The last couple of weeks emphasizing the running game won't hurt us."
