USC vs. FSU

Times staff writer

© St. Petersburg Times, published September 26, 1998

WHEN/WHERE: 3:30 p.m.; Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee.

TV/RADIO: Chs. 28, 40. WLKF-AM 1430, WOCA-AM 1370.

COACHES: Southern California -- Paul Hackett (first season at USC; 16-20-1 overall). Florida State -- Bobby Bowden (210-52-4, 23rd season; 283-84-4 overall).

LINE: Florida State by 15.

ANOTHER UNDEFEATED FOE: For the fourth consecutive week, the Seminoles face an opponent that hasn't lost this season. That's something Bowden has never taken lightly. Said Bowden: "If the other team hasn't lost, their kids play with more confidence. They don't think you can beat them. Now once a person's been beat, then all of sudden, you know you can be had. Well, here comes another undefeated team in here that doesn't want to fall."

READY OR NOT: Ten offensive players, including QB Chris Weinke and most of the starters on the OL, missed practices earlier this week with an intestinal virus.

SERIES GLANCE: FSU won the first meeting between these two tradition-rich programs, escaping L.A. with a 14-7 win in last season's opener. Said Bowden: "It was an even game that was decided, in my opinion, by one play." After CB Brian Kelly dropped an INT that could have won the game for the Trojans in the fourth quarter, QB Thad Busby drove FSU 97 yards for the winning TD.

LAST WORD: "Southern Cal has excellent skill; they have the skill to match our skill. You like to match your skill guy up against somebody who's weak, but they've got excellent secondary (players) and linebackers." -- Bowden.
