Title bowl maintains interest in Seminoles

TALLAHASSEE -- Although Florida State has an early loss, representatives of the Fiesta Bowl, home of this year's national championship game, made the trek here.

"The main reason for the visit is to maintain the relationships," said Craig Ankeney, the team selection chairman and a member of the board of directors. "You still have to promote. You want people to attend even when you don't have the national championship game."

The showdown between the top teams, as determined by the new Bowl Championship Series ratings system, rotates among the Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and Rose bowls.

"We really don't think there's going to be many undefeated teams, so an 11-1 would be in the running," Ankeney said. Florida State could go 11-1.

CHART CLIMBING: With his 112 yards receiving, FSU's Peter Warrick has 1,757, 11th on the school's career list. He also has 17 touchdowns, tying him with Terry Anthony and Hassan Jones for seventh place.

HANGING ON TO THE BALL: For the second straight game, Florida State committed no turnovers. The last time FSU put together such a streak was 1990, against South Carolina on Nov. 3 and Cincinnati on Nov. 10.

UNEXPECTED RETURNS: FSU starting DT Larry Smith, who missed the past two games with an ankle injury, returned and combined with Jerry Johnson on a first-quarter sack. Meanwhile, OT Char-ron Dorsey, who suffered a neck injury in preseason, saw his first action of the season in the first half.

CROWDED HOUSE: The probability that Hurricane Georges would bring rain didn't keep fans at home watching on television. The announced crowd of 79,815 was the eighth largest at Doak Campbell Stadium.

WHISTLE BLOWERS: The Seminoles were called for 11 penalties for 96 yards, season highs.

SPECIAL MOMENT: Backup TB Raymont Skaggs, who is from Los Angeles, made his Florida State debut by running out the clock with two runs for 8 yards. "This means a lot, playing against my home team," he said. "I wanted to go there my whole life."

REMEMBER WHEN: Junior LB Bobby Rhodes partly blocked a USC punt in the fourth quarter, setting up FSU's final TD. It was the Seminoles' first block since LB Brian Allen's against North Carolina last season.

INJURY REPORT: FSU star TB Travis Minor, DE Roland Seymour and backup OG Donald Heaven sprained their left ankles. FB Lamarr Glenn suffered a mild left knee sprain. WR Ron Dugans had cramps but returned to catch his first touchdown of the season.

STRING UNBROKEN: Florida State owns a 19-game home winning streak and a 36-game home unbeaten streak dating to its infamous "Wide Right I" loss to Miami in 1991.

TROJAN IRONMAN: USC's most ardent fan, Giles Pellerin, 91, extended his streak of attending games to 790, dating to the start of the 1926 season. His enthusiasm remains unchanged, although he observed that "the rules changes have made it so much different. Back in the '20s, guys got taken out in the first half couldn't go back in."
