Lost to Connie Mack in 1988 in the closest U.S. Senate race in Florida history. Recently lost to Bush by 10 percent of the vote in governor's race on Nov. 3. He now takes over that Chiles has died. He will hold office until Republican Jeb Bush is sworn in on Jan. 5.
