A Pasco County judge and two Pinellas County lawyers have been selected as finalists to fill the Pinellas-Pasco Circuit judgeship opened by the death of Judge Bob Barker.

Gov. Lawton Chiles will select one name from the list of finalists, which comprises Pasco Judge William Sestak, Clearwater lawyer Nancy Moate Ley and Clearwater lawyer John A. Schaefer.

The Judicial Nominating Commission interviewed 11 candidates Wednesday before submitting the list of finalists to Chiles Thursday. He has 60 days to make the appointment. The position pays $113,833.

Sestak, 46, a county judge in New Port Richey, also was selected as one of three finalists last year to fill a circuit vacancy. Eventually, Chiles appointed Peter Ramsberger to the circuit post.

Sestak, who was born in Chicago and earned his law degree from Stetson University College of Law, won his county judgeship when he defeated Judge Dan Rasmussen in the 1992 election.

He also was an assistant public defender for five years.

Ley, 46, also a Chicago native, is a lawyer whose practice specializes in family and divorce law, in addition to family mediation.

Ley earned her law degree at the University of Notre Dame. Before entering private practice, she was an assistant public defender for nine years, serving the last five in the capital crimes division.

Schaefer's practice specializes in civil and commercial litigation, in addition to marital law. Schaefer, 47, earned his law degree from the University of Miami and his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Military Academy, where he was an associate professor of law from 1983 to 1986.

Pinellas County judges who were not chosen as finalists are: Patrick Caddell, Walter Fullerton, Karl Grube and Stephen Rushing.
