A BREAK IN THE ACTION
Arthur Smith rests on some baled tobacco leaves during a break between leaf inspections at the Madison Tobacco Sales Co. warehouse in Madison. Smith is a tobacco puller, going up and down the long lines of tobacco to ensure the quality of the leaf. Tobacco companies bid on the leaves. During this sale, 540,000 pounds of tobacco leaves were sold for an average price of about $1.80 a pound. Fifty to 60 tobacco farmers from Florida, Georgia and Alabama took part in the auction.
