Things could not have gone much worse when Pinellas schools began busing black students into Dixie Hollins High School. The black students felt unwelcome from the start. They regarded the school’s longtime symbol, the Confederate flag, as an insult. Many white students, for their part, feared the newcomers were taking over. When the school outlawed their cherished symbol, it was more than they could take. On Oct. 12, the tension exploded into violence. Rocks were thrown. People were spat upon. Several people were arrested or detained, including the seething young man in this photograph. Who was he, and what became of him?
