Last month: At Altamonte Springs, Broderick not only won the overall Class 4A individual title, but dominated every opponent she played through the state tournament. Broderick went 4-0 at state, never allowing more than three games in any set. In the overall final, she defeated the champion from the team No. 1 players' bracket, Cypress Bay's Veronica Suarez, 6-0, 6-1. "She played the way she's played all year (13-0 overall) and I knew if she did that she stood a very good chance of being the state champion," Alonso coach Helen Soash said. "She's a champion in every sense of the word." Broderick followed her singles title by teaming with senior Fernanda Ospina to reach the doubles final.

Future plans: Bad news for opponents: Broderick should be back and better than ever next season. She's currently ranked No. 5 in the state's 18-and-under division. She will play in several of the country's top junior events this summer. Broderick has taken unofficial visits to North Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

Her own words: "I have the technique. And the tactics are there. But I need to work on the mental part of the game. The junior year summer is the one where all the college recruiters come and watch you play. That's why it's important to be preared and play well."
