Last month: The 6-foot-7 first baseman/pitcher hit his 13th home run in a 7-2 loss to Jesuit on March 28, breaking Land O'Lakes' single-season record of 12 set by ex-Gator and Chicago Cubs prospect Kevin Collins in 1999. Piurowski hit his 14th against Zephyrhills two nights later and is within two of the Pasco County record of 16 set by Zephyrhills' Brett Cimorelli and Danny Wardell in 2000. Piurowski s batting .500, second in Pasco County to teammate Anthony Santa (.534), and his 32 RBIs trail only Gulf's Brandon Decker (33). His contributions have helped Land O'Lakes to a 14-3 record. The Gators earned the top seed in the Class 5A, District 7 tournament with an 8-0 mark and are closing in on a possible Sunshine Athletic Conference championship.

Future plans: A Class 5A all-state first team tight end, Piurowski committed to play football at Florida State, where his father, Paul, was as an All-American linebacker. He also could be taken in Major League Baseball's amateur draft.

His own words: "It's cool to break the record, but I was hoping to get the win (against Jesuit)," Piurowski said. "It's something that will be nice to reflect on once the season's over, but right now I'm worried about the team and winning games."
