Last month: Smith, 18, won the 200 meters at the Class 3A state meet in 21.20 seconds. His 47.25 in the 400 meters earned him third. And, he also ran a leg in the 4x400 relay that took third. Freedom, which had just five athletes, finished second, one point behind Hallandale.

Future plans: Smith, the son of the former U.S. Olympian with the same name (the elder Smith held the world record in the 100 meters from 1983-87 and won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics and a bronze in 1988) will compete for the Florida Gators at the next level. He hopes to turn pro in a couple of years. There also is an outside chance of him competing at the 2008 Olympics.

His own words: "I'm just trying to get better each time out and improve. But if I happen to break a record in the process, then I'd definitely be happy."
