John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr.: An American tragedy continues
He first became endeared to the American public as John John, the President’s son, who toddled in the Oval Office. Too soon even to comprehend it, he knew heartbreak, when, at age 3, he lost his father to an assassin’s bullets. On live national TV, he saluted his father’s passing, an image forever etched in the American memory. He grew up shunning the spotlight but nonetheless maintained a high public profile as a teenager, college student, law student, lawyer, then publisher of the magazine, George. Most lately, in 1996, he foiled the press and paparazzi by marrying Carolyn Bessette out of lens reach. His death, along with that of his wife and sister-in-law, in a private air mishap over the weekend of July 16-18 extends a long, string of tragedies endured by a wealthy, privileged family whose human losses are almost too numerous to comprehend.
