Dave LaGrua, chief of the Chassahowitzka Volunteer Fire Department, walks along the perimeter of a brush fire in the Weekiwachee Preserve on Thursday morning. The fire, believed to have been sparked by lightning Wednesday evening, was out of reach of firefighting vehicles, but firefighters made a stand at Shoal Line Boulevard just north of Hernando Beach to stop it from threatening homes. Firefighters were standing by Thursday as the area continued to smolder . Flames at one point reached 60 feet high, and First Baptist Church of Hernando Beach appeared to be in the fire's path until the winds shifted. Shoal Line Boulevard, meanwhile, was closed for hours Wednesday, resulting in long detours.
