2008 Barnes winners selected

Worth up to $15,000 per year for 4 years. Four winners selected annually

Application opens: July 1. Application deadline: October 15.

A scholarship for high school seniors in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
The Barnes Scholarships, offered through the St. Petersburg Times Fund, Inc., were established in 1999 to help college-bound teens who are high academic achievers and who have overcome significant obstacles in their lives. The scholarships are named for Andrew Barnes, former chairman and CEO of Times Publishing Co.

Who can apply
High school seniors in public and private high schools, as well as home-schooled students, in the Florida counties of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus and Manatee. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Preference will be given to students whose parents have not graduated from a college or university.

Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, community service and evidence of having overcome significant obstacles in life. The Barnes Scholarship is intended to help a high-achieving, financially needy student afford to attend his or her “dream” college. In the selection of semifinalists, preference will be given to students who want to attend schools outside of Florida.

Note: Children or resident family members of employees of the Poynter Institute and Times Publishing Co. and its affiliates are not eligible to apply for the Barnes Scholarship.

What the winners receive
Each of the four winners is eligible to receive up to $15,000 per year for four years to attend any nationally accredited college or university. The scholarship may be used to pay for expenses related to the cost of college attendance. The students must be enrolled full-time and remain in good academic standing to continue to receive the scholarship.
